How to Use LinkedIn to Connect with Recruiters

In all the talk about using LinkedIn to leave academia, there's something a lot of people don't mention... how to connect with recruiters! Recruiters are not hugely common in academia but they are very common beyond it! Just like everything else in your transition out of academia - connecting with recruiters on LinkedIn requires you to be strategic!

Do Your Research

A lot of job advertisements will have a recruiter's name and company (whether the job ad is on LinkedIn or a job website). Use this to your advantage by searching and connecting with them. Build up a database of recruiters who recruit for roles and organisations you want to work in/for. You can also use keywords to search.

Build Your Connection

Send a connection request and include a personalised message. Mention why you want to connect, such as your interest in their company or a specific job opening they are handling. Highlight any common connections or shared interests to make your request more relevant. LinkedIn allows you to message recruiters even if you are not connected. Introduce yourself, and say what role you are interested in and why. Ask for more information or a chat. Make sure you emphasise your key skills and achievements and how they align perfectly with the role. Explain how you will add value to the role and organisation. In any job application you need to show your 'value-added' so do this right from the start of the process with the recruiter!

Visibility & Engagement

A lot of recruiters post content on LinkedIn. Engage with their posts by liking, commenting, and sharing your insights. This can help you stay on their radar and showcase your knowledge. Participate in LinkedIn groups related to the organisations and sectors you want to move into. Recruiters often look in these groups to find potential candidates. By being active and sharing valuable insights, you can attract the attention of recruiters in your field.

Linked in Profile tips

• Make sure you keep your LinkedIn profile up-to-date!

• And if you are one of those people who say to me 'I have a profile but I don't use

it' now is the time to change!

• An optimised profile increases your chances of appearing in recruiter searches. Regularly update your profile!
