The Hidden Inequalities in Academia: Why Class Still Matters in UK PhD Careers

Academia sells itself as a place of open doors and endless possibilities. But

recent research by Anna Stansbury, discussed in the Financial Times, highlights a

stark reality: class-based inequalities persist, even among those who hold PhDs.

First-generation graduates with doctorates face disadvantages in employment

outcomes, institutional prestige, and salary levels compared to peers from more

privileged backgrounds.

The UK Picture: A Precarious Career Path

A 2022 University and College Union (UCU) report revealed that two-thirds of UK

university staff were considering leaving within five years due to declining pay and

worsening conditions for UK PhD Careers.

For academics from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, the challenge is even greater. Without family wealth or elite networks, many find it harder to endure years of short-term contracts.

Why Leaving Academia Can Be Liberating

The good news? Leaving academia doesn’t mean giving up on a fulfilling career. A 2023 survey by Technology Networks found that PhD holders moving into industry or other sectors often achieve higher salaries, greater stability, and healthier work-life balance.
