AI Enthusiasts VS Sceptics in Research and Evaluation
In this post, I reflect on the growing divide between AI enthusiasts vs sceptics in research and evaluation, and why more open discussion may be helpful.
Right or Wrong? Pioneer or Slowcoach?
Discussions about AI in research and evaluation often feel surprisingly polarised.
Some people are experimenting enthusiastically with AI tools. Others are deeply sceptical and prefer to avoid them altogether.
Both perspectives are understandable.
A Divided Conversation
In many professional spaces, AI discussions have quickly become debates about whether the technology should be embraced or rejected.
For researchers and evaluators, this can create an uncomfortable tension.
Our work depends on careful thinking, ethical considerations and methodological rigour. At the same time, AI tools are becoming increasingly embedded in the systems we use every day.
Space for Nuanced Conversations
Rather than framing the discussion as a choice between enthusiasm and rejection, it may be more helpful to create space for nuanced conversations.
Researchers and evaluators are used to learning, testing ideas and exploring new tools carefully.
Applying that same mindset to AI can be productive.
AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement
Many people are beginning to view generative AI as a practical assistant.
In research and evaluation contexts, AI may support tasks such as:
transcription
early-stage coding suggestions
summarisation
visualisation
However, interpretation and decision-making remain human responsibilities.
Exploring AI in Research and Evaluation
If you are interested in learning how AI can support research and evaluation work in a thoughtful way, my AI training workshops explore practical applications and limitations.
Takeaway: AI discussions benefit from curiosity and critical thinking rather than fixed positions.
